Why porcelain outdoors
Paving that does not need looking after.
Most people start with sandstone, limestone or concrete slabs in mind. Porcelain is fired so dense that water has nowhere to go, which is why it is frost-proof, stain-proof and never needs sealing.
It is also made thicker for outdoor use, so it copes with the things a patio actually has to carry: table legs, heels and the occasional dropped pot.
How it is laid
The base matters as much as the tile.
Outdoor porcelain can be laid in three ways. The right one depends on how the space is used and what is underneath it, so we talk it through before you choose a range.
Mortar bed
A full bed for patios and terraces that take regular use, furniture and foot traffic.
Pedestals
Raised supports that give a level deck over a falling surface, hide drainage and let rain run through the joints.
Gravel or grid
A free-draining base for garden paths and lighter-use areas, often with a grid to keep the spacing even.

Project consultation
We review your drawings, calculate quantities and advise on thresholds, falls and setting-out across both spaces. The fee is credited against your order if you proceed within 60 days.
Coping, steps and trims
Matching coping, step treads and trims are specified alongside the paving, so edges and changes of level look finished.
Indoors and out
When the floor carries on, the glass is the only boundary.
A level threshold makes the room feel bigger.
Set the kitchen floor and the terrace to the same finished height across a flush sliding door, lay the same tile in its 10mm and 20mm versions, and the eye stops registering where inside ends.
It only works if both are chosen together. Ask which ranges have an outdoor match before you settle on the indoor tile.

Outdoor porcelain, answered.
Do outdoor porcelain tiles need sealing?
No. Porcelain is dense enough that water, oil and dirt stay on the surface, so it never needs sealing.
Are outdoor porcelain tiles slippery when wet?
Outdoor ranges have a textured surface rated R11 or R12, the higher end of the slip scale, so they stay secure underfoot in the rain.
How thick are outdoor porcelain tiles?
Outdoor porcelain paving is usually 20mm thick. Indoor tiles from the same range are typically 10mm.
Can my patio match my kitchen floor?
Yes, with the right range. Many of our collections come in matching 10mm indoor and 20mm outdoor versions, so one floor can run from the kitchen to the terrace.
Do you supply steps and coping?
Yes. Matching coping, step treads and trims are available for many ranges and are specified alongside the paving.
